My alma mater just announced plans for a program to enable admittees to spend a year abroad doing social work prior to matriculating. What a great idea. Taking a gap year is common in the UK and other countries and has grown in popularity in the US but there are few formal programs like the one envisioned, and it was unheard of when I was in college. I want a gap year, too!
