Mocospace - The Largest Mobile Social Network You Haven't Heard About
Last Friday, TechCrunch broke the story (by breaking the embargo), on the $3 M funding of Mocospace by General Cataylst Partners, Pilot Group (Bob Pittman's fund) and Michael Dearing. Mocospace is a mobile social network that has been taking off of late. They claim nearly a million users and run rate of 500 M pageviews per month. Those are big numbers, especially for the mobile space and, by my reckoning, that should make them one of the largest mobile social networks - lower than MySpace or Facebook's mobile properties but not sure that there is any other mobile social net with that sort of traffic. I am an advisor to the Company and have had the pleasure of working with their founders, Justin and Jamie, for the past 6 months. I'm struck by the passion of Mocospace - the users form a passionate community and the founders are very passionate about the community - something readily apparent when seeing the community response to their postings. There's this authenticity to the site in its design and tone, which I believe is one reason users are attracted to it. I'm sure there will be lots of interesting opportunities for Mocospace to serve their community, from content promotion to new features, and I hope I can play a small role in this. In the meanwhile, congrats to Justin, Jamie and the rest of the team -- the hard part begins!
