EMI & Apple are set to make a major announcement tomorrow. According to rumors and various reports, it will be to sell DRM-free tracks in iTunes (and then other services later on). Even though it's April Fool's Day, I believe it since the CEOs of both companies will be part of the news conference. Assuming this is the case, it would make the first of my Digital Music Predictions for 2007 come true (not that I went out on much of a limb!).
EMI has been speculated to have been considering this for a while (as I wrote about here), and it looks like they were able to work something out with Apple. The other services that are currently incompatible with the iPod (Zune, Napster, Rhapsody) need to have an inter-operable catalog more than Apple but this move would also take some heat off of Apple in the EU where regulators have been threatening to force their hand on interoperability.
