Darren Herman posts about the brands in Second Life (courtesy of Mark Wallace). Lots of brands have created islands, which naturally begs the question of how many users they've garnered and whether they've achieved the ROI they were looking for. For some (most?) brands, the PR and halo value of being perceived as cutting edge, even to a small group of people (ie those that read up on these things) or even their employees may be enough. Others may well be disappointed by the reported dearth of users. I think it all depends on your expectations and what you're trying to achieve...
