Good to see others blog Luna's last show. It was really special and I had goosebumps serveral times that night. I loved the setlist -- the seldom-played "Everybody's Talkin", "Indian Summer"; the classics like "Tiger Lilly", "Chinatown" and "Bewitched"...they had a rocking rendition of "Malibu Love Nest"...but the song that to me was worth the price of admission, worth the wet, snowy trip downtown and the few hours of sleep before my flight to SF the next morning, was "Moon Palace". What a beautiful, ethereal song. I only wish my wife could have been there with me. Took me back to 1995 when I was first introduced to the band in college and the years since then -- spending a lonely summer in NYC, graduating, living in NYC, moving to SF and then moving back to NYC.
It was a beautiful night. The venue, the Bowery Ballroom, was just the intimate place for an event like this. They allowed cameras and people were snapping away. There were inside jokes between the band and the fans between songs. The crowd was at once sentimental and thankful, as was the band. I don't think it hit some of the crowd that this would be the last Luna show ever. Some fans have set up a blog about Luna's Last Waltz It seemed to me that some of the songs were played a tad slower than usual so that the last moment might be delayed just a bit longer. Dean got emotional more than once but held it together. I got a little emotional again when Dean read a telegram sent by (former bassist) Justin from New Zealand.
I've seen them several times. One of my favorites was when I was a sophomore in college. They played at the Campus Club and ripped the place apart. It was a 3-man affair because Sean was very sick, but Dean more than made up for it. The room was packed and sweaty and the band fed off the energy. The encore was a cover of "Walk on the Wild Side" with Dean scatting the sax part. I will never forget that night as I won't forget Monday night. Sigh.
I made my way to your blog from Luna's Last Waltz. Had to write, as I too saw a few Luna shows at Campus Club (not as a Princeton student, but as the then-girlfriend of one) ... somewhere I still have a Campus Club napkin with Stanley's autograph on it. (Am I misremembering or did they play at Terrace too?)
Will very much miss Luna. Was a fan since I first saw them play at the Academy in NYC in '92 (?) opening for The Sundays.
Best wishes from one fan to another.
